ACTION NEEDS ON LITTER

04 August, 2008

Councillor Helen Abrahams has called on the Lord Mayor to extend anti-litter law to West End.

Councillor Abrahams said The Gabba Ward Office has received a numerous complaints about the rubbish on the footpaths in West End in recent months.

“The complainants say Monday morning is the worse day of the week, she said.

“Most of the complaints are about discarded alcohol bottles or cans left on footpaths, gutters or in front yards. Food containers are the next most common item.

“One local resident who has been walking through the West End for most of her life said the litter problem is now as bad as it has ever been,” Councillor Abrahams said.

In the past, Councillor Abrahams has lobbied for improved street cleaning

“As a result of my actions, several streets will receive one additional clean a week,” she said.

“What really is needed is the ability to fine people for littering. The anti-litter laws work well in the CBD and should be extended to West End.

“The Lord Mayor has the power to take action on this issue.

“The Lord Mayor is promoting inner city living for Brisbane residents. This means providing the services for clean, litter free streets,” Councillor Abrahams said.
