The arches under West End’s William Jolly Bridge will be the home of a collaborative indigenous mural bringing together the concepts of culture and progress of Kurilpa.
Councillor Helen Abrahams is delighted the artwork funded through the Dutton Park Ward Parks Trust Fund has begun to take shape.
“Kurilpa Point is an important place for Indigenous people, and the mural will recognise that,” Cr Abrahams said.
“Indigenous artists Laurie Nilson and Gorden Hookey have been involved in the planning and now the creation of the artwork,” Cr Abrahams said.
“Laurie, who is from the Indigenous Cultural Unit with SouthBank CAE, has created some well-known works of art in West End and South Brisbane.
“Local residents would know Laurie’s work from the GOMA building and the mural at Peoples Park, Boundary Street, West End,” Cr Abrahams said.
“The artwork is about artists working collaboratively together,” Mr Laurie Nilson said.
“It’s about the old and the new – it’s a modern mural depicting culture and progress,” he said.
The artwork has been completed and will be installed under the bridge in March.
