'Cyclepods' making it easy for cyclists to catch a ride into the city

12 December, 2007

They look like mushrooms, are popping up everywhere and are great news for cyclists across the city.

Brisbane City Council Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson, Councillor Helen Abrahams, said 'Cyclepods' enabled cyclists to safely secure their bike at a CityCat ferry terminal before jumping on board and heading to their destination.

"Cyclepods are similar to a conventional bike rack, however the bike parking facility also offers a much higher level of security by allowing cyclists to lock both wheels and the frame to the structure," Cr Abrahams said.

"These innovative pods also offer a lot more shelter from the elements and can cater for up to eight bikes at a time.

"Council has installed Cyclepods at selected CityCat ferry terminals to encourage more cycling trips. These terminals include New Farm Park, Sydney Street, Brett’s Wharf, Hawthorne, Mowbray Park and Guyatt Park.

"Cycling is a fun way to get to your local ferry terminal and the Cyclepod eases the stress of locating a car park."

Cr Abrahams said some riders did not realise they could use the Cyclepods, so Council had produced a flyer which is set to be left with any bikes not making use of a nearby Cyclepod. The flyer will also be located on all the CityCat ferries to promote the Cyclepods.

"These Cyclepods are an important part of the Walking and Cycling Plan in Council's Active Transport Strategy, which aims to promote walking and cycling in the city, focusing on the many environmental, economic and health benefits these activities can bring," Cr Abrahams said.

"We are aiming to have 12% of all trips by walking and 5% of all trip by cycling in Brisbane by 2016."
