Animal lovers thinking about a new pet might like to see whether any furry friends at the Fairfield animal shelter need a home, local Councillor Helen Abrahams said.
“It’s always kinder to adopt a pet from a shelter than a pet store,” Cr Abrahams said.
“Unfortunately, this time of year is a very busy time for animal shelters. Pets are sometimes given as a ‘surprise’ without consulting the recipient.
“Many pets turn up at shelters because they are unwanted gifts.
“New Years Eve fireworks can also scare some pets and cause them to run away.
“Sadly many dogs turn up at animal shelters and are lost to their owners forever.
"I would encourage anyone looking to become a responsible pet owner to find their next best friend at the local Council or RSPCA animal shelter.
“It is important to consider whether your family is ready for a pet, and to consider a pet that suits their lifestyles.
“If you already own a dog – make sure it’s registered and wearing its tag.”
