Local Action on Energy Reduction

08 January, 2008

Energy meters to aid in energy reduction and reduced power bills around the home are now available for residents from the Dutton Park Ward Office, local Councillor Helen Abrahams said.

“I believe residents are increasingly looking to reduce their greenhouse emissions and to reduce their contribution to the impacts of climate change,” Cr Abrahams said.

“The meter is a small hand held device that is plugged in between the power point and the appliance and reads the amount of power used.

“It provides practical information so residents can be aware of their power use, and can choose to turn ‘stand by’ switches off or even use appliances less.

“I am providing 30 of the multi-function energy meters on a loan basis to residents to help them in reducing their greenhouse emissions,” she said.

In addition to providing the metres, Councillor Abrahams and local residents Judy Abernethy (mecu) and Mary Maher (an Al Gore Ambassador) will roll out climate change workshops in local streets from late January, which will continue throughout 2008.

“From three previous climate change forums I have held – I know people are really looking for ‘how to’ information,” Cr Abrahams said.

Trained Al Gore Ambassador Mary Maher hopes the workshops will bring like-minded neighbours together.

“Residents are telling me they wish to join with neighbours to take action on climate change at a grass-roots street level,” Mary Maher said.

Energy meters are available by contacting the Dutton Park Ward Office on 3403 8605 or by contacting Judy Abernethy at the mecu office in Browning Street, West End.
