Australia is famous for its unique wildlife, however, in the 200 years since European settlement, we have lost around 87 plant and 53 fauna species through extinction.
To acknowledge National Threatened Species Week, Downfall Creek Bushland Centre will host a free family fun day on Sunday 9 September that aims to raise awareness and educate people of the importance of protecting and restoring threatened species in the wild.
Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson, Councillor Helen Abrahams, says the Family Fun Day will have a range of activities to keep the whole family entertained including food stalls, lucky door prizes, children’s activities, boomerang painting and live entertainment.
“The theme for this year is protected areas, and through live wildlife presentations and environmental displays, attendees will learn about local threatened species and what actions they can take to help ensure the future of Brisbane’s unique flora and fauna,” Cr Abrahams said.
Each family who attends will receive a free native plant.
As there is limited parking at the centre, patrons are encouraged to catch public transport.
National Threatened Species Day is celebrated on 7 September each year to commemorate the death of the last Tasmanian tiger in captivity in Hobart in 1936.
