Go Ahead for Fluoro Recycling

29 August, 2007

Old fluorescent lamps can be now be collected at the Household Hazardous Waste collection day on September 8, Environment and Sustainability Chair Helen Abrahams said.

“With the move to phase out incandescent light bulbs in favour of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) – it is very important to dispose of CFLs properly,” she said.

“CFLs are much more energy efficient and have a much longer life than traditional incandescent lamps.

“They also contain elemental amounts of mercury – so it is important we ensure the residents of Brisbane are able to do the right thing and dispose of them properly.

“Almost 100% of the materials from discarded fluorescent lamps can be recycled – by collecting old fluoros we hope this can be achieved,” Cr Abrahams said.

Incandescent lights plan to be phased out in Australia over the next three years and replaced with energy efficient globes.

Household lighting costs can be reduced by up to 66 percent with the use of CFLs compared with traditional incandescent light bulbs.

The Household Hazardous Waste Day will be held on September 8, 8am until 3pm at the Nudgee Transfer Station, Nudgee Road.
