Water Savers Congratulated

31 January, 2007

Local Councillor Helen Abrahams today congratulated residents of Annerley, Yeerongpilly, Yeronga and Tennyson for their record water saving efforts.

These suburbs have not only recorded reductions of up to 50% since the drought, they have also cut their water consumption by more than 10% in the last three months.

“This really shows that residents are committed to saving water during the drought, and are willing to take those extra measures to save water,” Cr Abrahams said.

“Anecdotally, I am hearing that people are collecting the water from their showers and basins and bucketing it onto their gardens.

“One thing I would encourage resident to take up, is purchasing a downpipe diverter from one of Council’s WaterSense Blue Vans for $18.50.

“This will allow any sprinkle of rain or dew to be diverted and used on the garden.”

Tennyson recorded the largest water saving since the drought with a 54% reduction in water use, up from 40% last August.

The average water saving by residents in Annerley was 31%, up from 21%.  Savings by Yeerongpilly residents were 40%, up from 25%.  For Yeronga, the savings were 43%, up from 33%.
