Separate Path for Cyclists

Separate path for cyclists the way to go

Cr  Helen Abrahams, The Gabba Ward calls on The Lord Mayor to proceed to install  ‘Copenhagen’ bike lanes along Stanley Street, Woolloongabba.

‘Copenhagan’ bike lanes permit cyclists to travel in both directions in the one lane on the road. Usually, the bikeway is separated from vehicles.

Stanley Street is the missing link in a safe bike route from the green bike lanes in Stanley Street near the Mater Hospital and the heritage area of Logan Road.

Stanley Street is a main route to the Goodwill Bridge from the eastern suburbs and so it should be one of the Lord Mayor’s funding priorities. He has promised $100 million to improve cycling and this area is a ‘black spot’ for cyclists and pedestrians.

Separating the cyclists from the pedestrians and shop entrances is the best way to solve this problem. It will only get worse as more and more people switch to cycling.

‘I share the concern of the Woolloongabba traders about the speed and so danger of cyclists riding at speed along the footpath.’ Said Cr Abrahams

‘I have given a commitment to work with the members of the Woolloongabba Business Association to achieve a safe bikeway and safe footpath for everyone’ said Helen Abrahams

‘I do not support the installation of a ‘Cyclist must dismount’ sign if it were to extend for three blocks’ said Cr Abrahams

‘It gives the wrong message to cyclists and it is rarely effective’ said Cr Abrahams

‘If cyclists speed as they do not wish to get caught, the safety problem may become worse’ said Cr Abrahams.
